FAQs

What are nail polish solvents?

Gel and nail polish solvents, also known as nail polish remover, are chemical substances used to dissolve or remove old and unwanted nail finishes from the nails. It’s specifically formulated to break down the ingredients in nail polish, such as resins, pigments and polymers, making it easier to slough away polish.

While acetone is the most commonly used gel nail polish solvent, ethyl acetate and isopropyl alcohol are other alternatives. Additionally, to successfully eliminate old colour and residue, many manicurists first use a nail steam remover to help lift the colour and base.

Can alcohol be used as a solvent for nail polish?

Alcohols, like isopropyl alcohol, can remove your nail polish and residue; however, it is less effective than alternatives and may require you to rub it excessively into your nail and leave it on longer to break down the polymer bonds.

What is nail polish solvent made of?

Acetone in nail polish remover is primarily made from propylene, a gas that helps give the solvent its pungent odour and why it self-dries and evaporates with exposure to air. On the other hand, ethyl acetate is an ether of ethanol and acetic acid described as having a sweet, pear-like smell.

Can you use nail polish remover as a solvent?

Yes — gel and nail polish solvents are incredibly versatile products to use at home and in your salon. Some additional uses of acetone include:

  • Cleaning and sanitising surfaces
  • Dissolving and cleaning away ink, markers and certain types of paint
  • Removing sticky labels and adhesives
  • Sanitising nail tools such as scissors, cuticle pushers, nail clippers and tweezers

How do you use nail polish solvent?

To use a gel nail polish solvent or remover, follow these general steps:

  1. Prepare the area — Work in a well-ventilated space to ensure proper air circulation and protect your work surface with a towel or a disposable mat to prevent any damage from spills or drips.
  2. Use a nail steamer — Place your fingers in the inlets and the steamer will heat and warm your nail polish to weaken the polymer bonds and ensure a clean removal. While this step is optional, it allows you to remove as much polish and residue as possible to minimise touch-ups during the removal process.
  3. Apply the solvent — Hold a saturated cotton pad firmly against the nail surface for a few seconds to allow the solvent to start breaking down the polish.
  4. Wipe away the polish — Once the polish begins to dissolve, gently press and slide the cotton pad towards the tip of the nail. This motion helps to remove the softened polish from the nail surface. Repeat this process for each nail, using a fresh cotton ball or pad as needed.
  5. Clean up any residue — After removing the majority of the polish, use a clean cotton ball or pad soaked in the solvent to clean up any remaining traces of polish or stubborn areas. Be careful around the cuticles and skin to avoid excessive contact with the solvent.
  6. Wash and moisturise — Once the polish is completely removed, wash your hands with soap and water to remove any residue from the solvent. Pat your hands dry and apply hand cream or cuticle oil to replenish moisture to the nails and cuticles.
